UBR 13: bodywork design and manufacture update |

UBR13 -

This year's UBRacing entry, UBR 13 will feature bodywork manufactured in-house from carbon-aramid composite. The material, which used to great success for the seat/firewall on UBR 12, provides a significant weight saving over fibreglass which has been used in recent years, making the design of larger, more complex sections feasible without the bodywork being unduly heavy. The bodywork design features five separate components - left and right hand sidepods and sidepanels and a removable nose section.

This year, the design and manufacture of the bodywork for UBR 13 has been greatly aided by two of our sponsors. Aston Martin have provided the team with aesthetic and practical design advice and supplied the high density foam required for manufacture of the necessary molds. The foam and CAD designs were then taken to Survirn Engineering near Longbridge who provided use of their large-scale CNC machining facilities and skilled technicians, free of charge, for recreating the mold designs.

The use of CNC machining has had an enormous impact on the manufacture time associated with bodywork manufacture and has allowed a more adventurous bodywork shape to be concieved. As always the team are very grateful to all our partners and sponsors and look forward to continuing the relationship with both Aston Martin and Survirn in the future.

UBRacing were proud to welcome a visit by the University of Birmingham Vice Chancellor this morning. Professor David Eastwood is an avid Formula 1 and motorsports enthusiast and was keen to meet the team and learn about Formula Student.
His visit included a tour of the UBRacing laboratory, the engine test cells and both UBR12 and UBR13. After an informal discussion about the competition and technical aspects of the cars, Professor Eastwood was a presented with a memento of his visit - the dashboard from a Jaguar Formula 1 car, signed by its driver, Johnny Herbert.

UBRacing are proud to announce that Mazak, manufacturers of CNC machinery and suppliers to Vodaphone Mclaren Mercedes have become the team's 'CNC Machining Partner' for the 2010 season. The partnership provides the team with a much needed source of machined components which will speed up the manufacture process and allow more ambitious designs decisions to be made. Mazak are currently manufacturing many of the components for one of this year's car's key features: the pneumatically controlled active differential.
In March UBRacing visited Mazak's 'European Technology Centre' (ETC) to give a presentation to the Worcester branch of the IMechE. As well as marking the start of Mazak's association with UBRacing, the event also gave its visitors a chance to find out about the concept of Formula Student, the history behind the competition and design details of this year's car.
The event was featured in an article in 'Production Engineering Solutions' which can be found here: http://www.pesmag.co.uk/news/20103/325/
More recently UBRacing returned to the ETC to help promote Mazak's week long 'F1 Open House' promotional event. Members of UBRacing were present along with last year's car throughout the week.
All of the UBRacing 2010 team would like to thank Mazak for their support so far and look forward to seeing the finished components.
